House Tree Person

ShanghART SUHE will present the group exhibition House-Tree-Person from July 10 to August 21, 2026. The exhibition brings together works by twelve artists: Chen Xiaoyun, Chen Zihao, Dong Bingqing, Gao Lei, Li Qinyang, Liu Lijuan, Liu Yucen, Lu Yu, Wilhelm Sasnal, Zhang Meng, Zheng Xue, and Zheng Yiran.

As a classic subject in psychological analysis through drawing, the traditional “House-Tree-Person” test asks participants to use pencil on white paper to draw a picture containing a house, a tree, a person, and other elements. The drawing is then read as a projection through which to analyze the subject’s subconscious, interpersonal relationships, and current emotional state. In this exhibition, however, the artists’ media are no longer confined to pencil and paper, but extend to material painting, sculpture, installation, fiber, photography, and participatory performance, becoming apertures through which to explore inner psychological states.

Here, the creative outcomes of “House-Tree-Person” are exhibited in a public space beyond the consulting room, with the aim of dissolving the boundary between psychological test report and introspective artistic creation. As forms of expression that likewise confront the inner self, countless drawings are filed away in folders, while every sand tray is smoothed over after being assembled, completing its entire mission within the clinic. This exhibition attempts to transform those sealed, silent monologues into active acts of self-analysis.
